Piketon Beginner Band

This is the home page for the elementary band program within the Scioto Valley Local Schools. This band involves the sixth grade and this element of the band program is responsible for the fundamental and intermediate development of the student musician.  Students of all shapes, sizes, and ages are members of the band, and all students receive a musical education consisting of not only the fundamentals of playing an instrument, but also the fundamentals of reading and appreciating music.

The band rehearses literature of the appropriate age and developmental level.  Students rehearse two days a week in a full ensemble setting.  During the remaining three days, students work in brass, woodwind, or percussion sectionals to help emphasize the skill set that is specific for their instrument.  As a result, students receive comprehensive knowledge in the development of band sound and playing techniques.

Students rehearse daily on literature and performance techniques that enhance their mastery of the instrument and the understanding of musical notation and history.  In addition, students are exposed to the cultural aspects of music and the significance of music within society.  During this level, students are also exposed to the many styles of music, as well as the variety of ensembles available within the band program.  Students in this group work in rehearsal to prepare four concerts: in the fall, at Christmas time, early spring, and an end of the year concert.

As a member of the band program in the sixth grade, students are also able to participate in other elective classes such as art, and physical education.  Many of the band students also participate in LEAD and are involved in extra-curricular activities such as sports, Heart for Art, and the Masters of Music program.

We are always looking for new members, so if you are interested in joining the band, please contact Mr. Barnes
